Pipe Dream: Fund Raiser & Dance Party
Arte Américas was targeted recently by metal thieves. Under the cover of night, copper and brass pipes were pilfered, yielding just enough “scrap” metal to net only around $120.
The cost of the resulting damage was dramatic: all running water was cut off to the building for several days, thousands of dollars for the repair and replacement of pipes, and the installation of two wrought iron security cages. The story attracted the local English and Spanish-language news media and brought further awareness to the copper theft epidemic.
"The funds used to cover these costs had been previously earmarked for an upcoming project to build a new stage in the outdoor Plaza," said Arte Américas Director Frank Delgado. "But sadly all money was depleted in order to make the necessary repairs to open the cultural center's doors again -- we now need to raise double the money if we're going to be able to keep the dream of a new stage alive," he added.
Vocalist/percussionist Marivel Luna and the Revolution Band will provide a soundtrack of oldies-but-goodies, 70s funk, rancheras, country western, Latin Rock, Tejano, and R&B hits.
Raffle prizes are being donated by local artists and business owners and include everything from front-row seats to upcoming concerts to framed art, CDs, and valuable services. Raffle tickets will cost $1 and $5.
Tasty food will be provided by an award-winning taco truck, and a full bar will be available to guests.
